Hi Everyone, My name is Una….
you can see me on the Success Stories page. I am so excited to be able and write the Chain Free Beaufort newsletter this month.
I am a recovering Chained dog that lived with several of my siblings chained as a puppy. My owner said she loved all of us, but would never let us inside nor run free with my brothers and sisters.
I now live with a wonderful family that really LOVES me. I have a wonderful mom and a fun family of cats and doggie! I’ve moved up north and just love it when I have the chance to run in the snow outside and then curl up in the den inside to rest!

So, let me bark to you a few things going on at Chain Free Beaufort:
Legislative News
Good Afternoon,
Please support Bill 958 in the Senate, lives both animal and human depend on it.
Reported in The State on Friday, March 5, 2010 out of Bishopville, South Carolina is the incident of a 65 year old woman being killed by her nephew’s pit bull. The Associated Press identified that “The dog broke free from a chain attached to a stake in the ground and attacked…as the man fed other dogs in the yard”. The wife was attacked when she attempted to beat the dog off the man.
This situation and tragic, preventable death underscores the problem with there being NO laws prohibiting the chaining and tethering of dogs in South Carolina. Dogs tethered for long periods of time can become highly aggressive, regardless of breed. Dogs feel naturally protective of their territory and this incident occurred while dogs were being fed which created an additional volatile situation. The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that 17% of dogs involved in fatal attacks on humans between 1979 and 1998 were restrained on their owners’ property at the time of the attack.
How many attacks and deaths are necessary in South Carolina before a law is instituted prohibiting chaining? Senate Bill 958 is under review and needs to be enacted to protect public safety and lives.

Great Rescue News!
One of our Chain Free board members recently rescued a Hound, who is now proudly known as Kane, from an area around Bray’s Island. It was shared with us the owners threw him and two other dogs out of a truck at the end of hunting season.
Kane was severely underweight and in need of immediate medical attention and we jumped at the chance to give him a second chance at life.
Living in a wonderful rescue center, Kane is now feeling and acting like a true Hound with lots of fun energy and loves resting in anyone’s lap.
Kane is now available for adoption. Please check out our pets available page for more information about Kane and our other rescues.
